- (1774-1862)physicist, mathematician, astronomerBorn in Paris, Jean-Baptiste Biot became professor of physics at the collège de france in 1800 and was elected to membership in the Academy of Sciences in 1803. In that year he discovered the celestial origin of meteorites, and began his studies of the density of gases. Biot is best known for his optical law on polarized light, and was the first to use the saccharimeter in determining the nature and amount of sugars in solutions. He also formulated, with the French physicist Félix savart in 1820, the Briot-savart Law concerning the effect of an electric current on a magnetic field. Biot was made a member of the Académie Française in 1856.
